 Straw Bale Construction

Next>>

Building with bales of straw was a forgotten art until a few decades ago. Renewed interest in natural materials has caused a revival for this ancient technique. Straw's insulating properties of between R-35 and R-45 make it a popular choice when choosing green building techniques, and it doesn't require a lot of building skill if you're a do-it-yourselfer. Bales of straw are stacked inside a wooden framework, then covered with plaster to achieve a look similar to adobe. Strawbales can also be blended with cob for interesting effects.
