Hall Family History

Next>>

The Hall Family is originally from Viking lands. My ancestors invaded Scotland sometime in the 10th century. We blended with the Scots until my family's branch left Scotland in the 1700s. We settled in Halifax, Virginia after a 70+ year stay in Barbados. The first written record in the U.S. is dated 1738. Some of my ancestors fought in the American Revolution. Sometime before the Civil War, the family was granted lands in the Carolinas and we left Virginia for South Carolina. A was born in Abbeville, South Carolina in 1959. My family has been in either Abbeville or Anderson county,  SC, or both, since before the Civil War.

The following pages contain memorabilia and tidbits about the Hall Family history.

Hall Family Tartan

Hall Family kilt patch. The hound is a Talbot. The Latin motto, "Vive ut vivas," translates to, "Live so that you might live," or in modern slang, "Party on, dude!"

Hall Family Coat of Arms. Again the Talbot hound appears. Beneath that, the helmet signifies knighthood, while the red banners signify that we fought in the war of Scottish independence from England (see Braveheart). The jagged edges of the banner represent the split from England. The three Scottish thistles on the shield are the symbol of Scotland. The motto, "Turpiter desperatur," means roughly that only a desperate person would dare challenge a Hall to combat.
